The Strichen War Memorial Project

I pass the Strichen War Memorial every day, and have often wondered about the young men from the village whose names are listed there. Curiosity tipped over into research, and I have uncovered basic information about most of the village’s WW1 soldiers. Using sources including the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's website (www.cwgc.org), old newspapers, soldiers’ records and census information, the stories of many of the Strichen loons are being gradually filled in with more detail. A handful are proving elusive and are so far just names on the monument.

Over the next few weeks, I will post information found so far. If you have a family connection to any of the men, please contact me. I am happy to share my research free of charge and would be delighted to add more to the village’s knowledge of the lads who marched to war and didn’t come home again.

The men who fell in the Second World War will follow in their turn.
